MARLEY: A NATURAL

Share

Ziggy Marley used two of his late father’s songs as the pivot of his show Saturday at the Universal Amphitheatre. First he shared the loss in the gentle, bittersweet “No Woman No Cry.” Then the band kicked into the firebrand anthem “Get Up Stand Up” with uncommon power. The Bob Marley legacy was clearly in good hands.

Like a prince coming of age, the reggae giant’s 17-year-old son has assumed his father’s role with a telling awareness and no self-consciousness. He combined proud tribute with independent vision, and the air of celebration seemed to say, “Let’s get on with it.”

His vocal and facial resemblance to Bob Marley was occasionally chilling, but was never the main point. Warm, assured and intense, Ziggy is simply a natural. His group the Melody Makers also features his sister Cedella, 19, and brother Stevie, 14, and they were both something. The other member, sister Sharon, 22, was home in Jamaica having a baby. We’ll probably have to keep an eye on that one, too.
