Engine Trouble Forces Jetliner Back to London
A People Express Boeing 747 bound for Newark, N.J., experienced trouble with one of its four engines and returned to Gatwick Airport here Sunday afternoon. The plane landed safely, with no injuries reported.
Associated Press reporter Joyce Rosenberg, on board Flight 005, said: “About a half-hour out of Gatwick, there was some kind of explosion you could feel in the plane. Passengers on the right side said they saw some flames and some kind of material coming out of the engine.”
Timothy Burke, the airline’s station manager at Gatwick, said engine No. 4 was shut down.
