Three more nations pulled out of the Commonwealth Games today, swelling the list of boycotters to 27 and threatening to make a shambles of the event over Britain’s refusal to impose sanctions against South Africa.

It was Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s rejection of sanctions as a means of forcing Pretoria to negotiate with black leaders that prompted Cyprus, Sri Lanka and the Seychelles to join 24 other nations in boycotting the games starting Thursday in Edinburgh, Scotland.

India joins list, Page 9.
