“The Shirelles Anthology.” Rhino. ADD (analog recording, digital remix). Sound quality and packaging in the latest in Rhino’s prized CD retrospective series continue excellent, though the music isn’t as essential as that of earlier Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis entries. The Shirelles--a pioneering “girl group” with a dozen Top 40 hits in the early ‘60s, including “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”--are appealing, but the group just doesn’t assert the same personal stamp and dramatic urgency exhibited in the recordings of many subsequent female groups, notably the Supremes and the classic Phil Spector stable.
