Micropolis said its earnings soared more than ninefold, to $4.4 million, or 42 cents a share, in the second quarter ended June 27. Sales jumped 169% from the same period last year, to $55.3 million.

Micropolis, based in Chatsworth, has posted large earnings increases over the past year because of strong demand for its high-speed, high-capacity disk drives, which are used to store and retrieve data for personal computers.

For the first six months of its fiscal year, Micropolis earned $8.2 million, or 82 cents a share, up from $74,000, or 1 cent a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 189%, to $105.9 million.
