Chilean President Augusto Pinochet denied he plans to run for reelection in 1989 without opposition, saying he “forgot” to announce that future elections will be open to other candidates. “I nobly recognize that I forgot to say that the next eight-year term will be undertaken in full democracy, Pinochet told an annual mayors’ meeting. Chile’s constitution now says that members of the ruling junta must choose the single candidate in the 1989 election. It says voters will be allowed only to say yes or no as to whether the candidate would serve as president for eight years.
