Spanos Says There Is No Progress in Talks With O’Neal, FitzPatrick

Charger owner Alex Spanos reported no progress Tuesday in negotiations with first-round draft choices Leslie O’Neal and James FitzPatrick.

Spanos also indicated that he would be surprised if running back Lionel James, who is seeking a new contract as he enters his option year, is a holdout when the full squad reports Friday.

Spanos vigorously defended the offers he has made to O’Neal and FitzPatrick along with fourth-rounders Ty Allert and Tommy Taylor, who also are holdouts.

“I’m not low-balling anybody--my offers are damn good offers, especially in comparison to others around the league,” he said. “I believe in paying well and being fair.”

Spanos and General Manager Johnny Sanders still are analyzing a new proposal received from FitzPatrick’s agent, Leigh Steinberg. “They reduced what they’re asking, but not enough,” Spanos said.

Sanders said he had talked with O’Neal’s agent, Marvin Demoff, but said the Chargers are “standing pat.”

In regard to James, Sanders said: “Lionel has gone on record as wanting to play football. Well, Mr. Spanos has given him the opportunity with a fine increase.”

Thunder and lightning preceded a downpour at Tuesday afternoon’s practice. . . . Third-round draft choice Jeff Walker was due to arrive in town Tuesday night and sign his contract. . . . Quarterback Darryl Dickey, one of three candidates for the No. 3 job, injured his knee when hit by Lee Williams. It is not known how long he will be out. . . . Veteran cornerback Danny Walters reported. . . . Rookie running backs Casey Brown and Ralph Stockemer left camp and were waived. . . . Guard Jerry Doerger is undergoing tests for possible shin splints. . . . Guard Chris Faulkner suffered a mild concussion but may practice today. . . . The Chargers will scrimmage the Rams here at 1 p.m. Thursday.
