Carson : Trash Pickup Rate Hiked

Share

Residents will pay about 25% more for trash pickup than they expected to in the next year because of increases approved this week by the City Council.

Rates will rise immediately from a monthly household fee of $7.15 to $9.06. The new rate will be $9.48 during the first half of 1987, when rates were supposed to be $7.57 under step increases allowed in the city’s contract with its waste hauler, Western Waste Industries.

The increase was scaled down from the requested raise that would have boosted the rate for the rest of 1986 to $9.55 and for the first half of 1987 to $10.11.

Western Waste said its contract with the city provides for an increase because its insurance rates had been drastically increased and county dump fees had been raised. A staff analysis confirmed that Western Waste was entitled to an increase but not one as large as requested.

The council voted 3 to 1 to accept the staff recommendations. Voting against the increase was Vera Robles DeWitt.
