Long Beach : Jail for CSULB Accountant

Share

A former accountant for California State University, Long Beach, was sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years’ probation after admitting that he embezzled $13,000 from school trust accounts. Carlos Vargas, 36, explained in a letter to Superior Court Judge Richard F. Charvat that he took the money to assist his family in Peru. All of the money has been repaid to the university.

Court officials said the judge also ordered Vargas to pay a $500 fine and never administer any checking account other than his own. Vargas had written checks against the trust accounts--money received for special projects--to an import-export business that he owned and also to a cousin.
