Stan Morrison, USC’s former basketball coach, is reportedly the leading candidate to become the athletic director at UC Santa Barbara, it was learned Friday.

The job became available when Ken Droscher recently resigned.

Several people have been interviewed for the job, but it is believed that the position is Morrison’s if he wants it.

Morrison said Friday that he hasn’t been officially offered the job, but added that he’s “very interested” in the possibility of becoming the school’s athletic director.

“I’m anxious to work out details with the university that would make for a mutually compatible agreement,” he said.

Morrison, 46, was fired as USC’s basketball coach by Athletic Director Mike McGee at the end of last season but was retained by the school as an associate athletic director.

Morrison was USC’s basketball coach for seven years. His Trojans were co-champions of the Pacific 10 with Washington in 1984-85. But the team finished last in the conference the past season, a factor leading to his dismissal as coach.

If Morrison becomes UCSB’s athletic director, he’ll be associated with another former Trojan, Jerry Pimm, the Gauchos’ basketball coach, who played for USC in the late 1950s.
