Japan Arrested 23,344 for Drug Abuse in Year

TOKYO — Police seized a record amount of illegal drugs in Japan last year and the number of people arrested for drug abuse exceeded 20,000 for the sixth year running, the Health Ministry said in a report released Saturday.
The report said 649 pounds of drugs with a street value of about $375 million were confiscated. More than half of the drugs were thought to have been smuggled from Taiwan. It said 23,344 people were arrested for drug abuse, more than half of them for second offenses.
