Bermuda’s surprising withdrawal from the 13th Commonwealth Games overshadowed the sporting activity Saturday.

The boycott was designed to put pressure on the British government to impose economic sanctions on South Africa.

Bermuda’s participation seemed secure two days ago, when its team marched in the opening ceremony.

Bermudan team manager John Morbey, disappointed with the pullout, said: “It is my opinion that this action is contrary to the interests of sport, in Bermuda and throughout the world, interests which should be foremost in the considerations of any controlling body.”

In swimming, a showdown in the 400-meter individual medley between world record-holder Alex Baumann of Canada and Australian Robbie Woodhouse fell flat when Woodhouse never threatened. Baumann, 22, clocked a games record of 4:18.29 to beat Woodhouse by more than four seconds.

Stealing the limelight was 13-year-old Canadian Allison Higson, who unexpectedly won the women’s 200-meter breaststroke in a Games record 2:31.20. She is the youngest gold medalist in Commonwealth Games history.

In track, Canada’s Ben Johnson, the fastest sprinter in the world this year, made his first appearance on the track, cruising to victory in his 100-meter heat in 10.16.
