The head of Orange County’s Roman Catholic Diocese was in critical condition today after lapsing into a coma while being treated for a lung infection during the weekend, church officials said.

Bishop William R. Johnson, 67, spiritual leader for 500,000 Catholics, developed pneumonia shortly after being admitted to St. Joseph Hospital on Saturday for a pulmonary infection, hospital spokesman Dennis Gaschen said. “He is not responsive, and the next few hours are going to be the turning point,” Gaschen said.
