A film about the turbulent aftermath of Belgrade’s break with Moscow has won Yugoslavia’s most prestigious film award, the leading daily Politika said.

The film “Happy New Year, 1949,” directed by Stole Popov, took the gold medal at the 33rd annual festival of Yugoslav films in the resort town of Pula.

It portrays the divided loyalties of a Macedonian family during Yugoslavia’s 1948 break with Stalin, after which the country helped to found the non-aligned movement.
