A judge in Chicago ruled that two followers of radical politician Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. cannot force the Illinois Democratic Party to support their candidacies. Circuit Judge David Shields said that the Democratic primary victories on March 18 by Mark Fairchild and Janice Hart, for lieutenant governor and secretary of state, entitled them only to places on the November ballot. The Democratic State Central Committee argued that it would be unconstitutional to force the party "to engage actively in an effort to elect candidates whose positions are abhorrent to them."
