The City of Orange kicked in $10,000 this week to help the Jail Action Committee fight a proposed jail in Anaheim.

Tuesday, Anaheim officials praised the Orange City Council’s decision Monday night to contribute money to the group, which was formed after the Board of Supervisors in May designated a 7.6-acre site at Katella Avenue and Douglass Road in Anaheim as the preferred site for a new county jail facility.

Anaheim, which has vehemently protested the proposed site, contributed $10,000 last week to the Jail Action Committee. Residents and businesses in both Anaheim and neighboring Orange have said the site near the Anaheim Stadium is not appropriate for a new jail.

The committee is composed of representatives from the tourism industry, Disneyland, the Chamber of Commerce and other groups.

Thus far, the Jail Action Committee has received about $70,000 in contributions and committed itself to pay $100,000 for consultant work, said Allan B. Hughes, chairman of the committee and executive director of the Chamber of Commerce. The committee hired consultants to review the county’s environmental impact report once it is completed and to recommend other sites for a new jail, Hughes said.
