Paramilitary police here arrested 412 people over Peru’s independence day holiday after a wave of leftist guerrilla attacks, a civil guard spokesman said Wednesday.

He said no guerrillas were seized in the sweep, which followed 13 rebel attacks Sunday. Four people were wounded and blazes were set at three luxury hotels in the attacks.

The attacks came on the eve of the first anniversary of the Social Democratic government of President Alan Garcia on independence day July 28.

Police detained 350 people during the sweep because they lacked identification papers. They were later freed after relatives flocked to civil guard posts to vouch for their identity.

Prostitutes, thieves and 15 abandoned children were also rounded up, the spokesman added.
