More Balmy Weather Is Expected This Weekend

San Diegans will once again be treated to seasonal weather this weekend, as a strong upper-level high-pressure system over the Southwest keeps the area fair and warm.

No major changes in temperatures or humidity are expected, said forecaster Dan Atkin of the National Weather Service. The only change is the chance of some tropical moisture moving into the mountain and desert regions.

There is a 20% chance of isolated thundershowers in those regions by Saturday, but Atkin said it would be unlikely the storms would move into the inland valleys and coastal areas.

The coastal areas will again have night and morning low clouds. Coastal highs will range from 73 to 78 degrees, with lows in the mid-60s.

“The continuing marine layer means the same old late-night and early-morning low clouds and fog,” Atkin said. “The fog has hung on the beaches a little more persistently the last couple of days, and there might be only hazy afternoon sunshine along the coast.”

The surf will be two to four feet, and the ocean temperature around 66 degrees.

“None of the big surf we were seeing last weekend is expected,” Atkin said.

Inland temperatures will be between 85 and 93, with lows dipping to between 53 and 63 degrees.

The mountain regions will have slightly warmer days as the tropical moisture moves into the area. Highs will be in the mid-80s, and lows between 52 and 60 degrees.

The deserts will be fair and quite hot, with highs in the 108- to 116-degree range. Lows will be in the 70s.

The surf is expected to run 3 to 4 feet at most Southern California beaches (perhaps a foot or two higher at those with a more southerly exposure) on a 12-second interval. The afternoon seabreeze should hit 16 m.p.h. at times, the forecasters said, and air temperature could rise to the mid-70s each day, with ocean temperatures generally about 10 degrees cooler.

Yachtsmen who stay close to shore should find themselves dealing with 10 to 15 knot southwest to west winds and southwest swell to 3 feet most afternoons from Point Conception to the Mexican border, while those who venture 60 miles out or more should be prepared for 5-foot combined seas and west to northwest winds gusting above 12 knots at times.

Arizona’s weekend was looking generally hot and dry, with some increase in clouds and humidity, especially in the mountains, and some moderation of temperatures in the southeast. A few isolated thunderstorms were predicted for the central mountains and southeast, with mountain temperatures headed for the upper 80s and deserts expected to hit 115 or above.

The Las Vegas forecast called for sunny skies and temperatures reeaching the 115 degree mark daily before plunging back to the 70s overnight, and the weather service said anyone planning an Ensenada excursion can dress for mostly sunny days and starry nights with a temperature range from the low 60s to the high 70s, though there could be a chance for areas of dense morning fog inland each morning.

Those bound for San Francisco might take along a sweater . . . just in case: forecasters said there should be the usual fog along the coast and patchy low clouds inland through the morning, turning sunny by afternoon. The temperature range was expected to run from the mid-50s to the low 70s.
