LOOK ON LIGHT SIDE

I felt very disappointed and even a little angry after reading Chris Willman’s review of Depeche Mode’s Southern California performances (“Depeche Mode’s Dark Message,” July 15).

His classification of the group’s music as “. . . depresso-techno-pop” is completely off the mark and is typical of someone who does not bother to listen closely to Depeche Mode’s stirring lyrics.

He repeats the popular misconception that “Blasphemous Rumors” refers to “. . . a cruel, sadistic God. . . .”

But Depeche Mode is not obsessed with death; on the contrary, their songs reflect upon life and its complications, which we all experience. Depeche Mode is merely a melodic voice to all of our fears and frustrations.
