Children will be prohibited from selling snacks and trinkets to motorists waiting to cross the border as part of a new plan proposed by the Tijuana Visitors Bureau.

The plan calls for a private company to sell an assortment of food to northbound motorists waiting in lines at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings on the San Diego border. Tijuana police will begin enforcing the removal of children this weekend, said Alfonso Bustamante Jr., president of the tourism bureau.

Bustamante said the children’s removal is for their own safety. He said many tourists also have complained that the children insult them if they refuse to buy their goods.

Some of the children probably will be hired as vendors by the catering company, he said.
