Alabama Atty. Gen. Charles Graddick, stunned by a court order overturning his victory in the Democratic runoff for the gubernatorial nomination, called for a new election. Graddick beat Lt. Gov. Bill Baxley by 8,756 votes in the June 24 runoff to succeed outgoing George C. Wallace. A three-judge federal panel ruled Friday that Graddick violated the federal Voting Rights Act by encouraging Republicans to ignore Democratic Party rules and cross over to vote for him in the runoff. The judges ordered the Democratic Party either to name Baxley the winner or hold a new election.
