The World : British Shelled on Cyprus

Share

Three men who appeared to be Arabs fired rocket and mortar rounds into the British air base at Akrotiri in southwest Cyprus, slightly injuring two British women and a Cypriot bystander, British and Cypriot police sources said. The rounds landed near the windsurfing club and living quarters for married airmen, they said. The attackers are believed to have fled in a car. Security had been tightened at the base following threats by Arab terrorist groups that they would attack British installations in the wake of the U.S. air raid against Libya on April 15. Some of the American planes on that mission were based in Britain.
