Pakistan’s opposition alliance insisted that the government act by Sept. 20 to set a date for new elections, which it said should be held no later than Dec. 31. The 10-member Movement for the Restoration of Democracy also said that it will join with Benazir Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party in national protests on Aug. 14, the country’s independence day. President Zia ul-Haq and Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo have rejected calls for an election, saying the National Assembly, elected last year without participation by political parties, should complete its five-year term.
