An unarmed Tomahawk cruise missile fired from the battleship Iowa malfunctioned and automatically aborted its flight, landing in a southern Alabama swamp, the Pentagon said. The incident occurred about 16 miles west of Monroeville, Ala., more than an hour after the missile was launched in the Gulf of Mexico. The aborted flight followed a successful test of another Tomahawk the day before, said a spokeswoman for the Pentagon’s cruise missile office.
