If you get caught feeding the Canada geese on Crystal Lake, you could be slapped with a $50 fine as part of a program to get rid of the birds.

The City Council adopted an ordinance Monday banning feeding the wild geese in the hope they will go away. The penalty for second offenders is $100.

Since a health agent complained in June that the birds’ droppings posed health hazards, the flock at the reservoir has grown from 55 birds to more than 100, council member Ronald Cormier said.

The city health department is considering deploying swans and motorboats to scare off the geese.
