Lennox : School Board Replacements
Trustees of the Lennox Elementary School District have appointed two community leaders to complete the terms of Eunice Strange, a veteran board member and retired district employee who died last month, and Robert Vandeveer, a retired aerospace engineer who resigned to move to Tennessee.
The new trustees are Mary Davis, a longtime resident active in school and community affairs, and Carmen Martinez, who has worked in anti-drug programs. They will take office Aug. 12 and serve until the November, 1987, elections.
Other trustees are Edward Urrutia, James Haley and Hector Carrio.
The board also appointed Assistant Supt. Charles Shields to replace Supt. Kenneth L. Moffett, who resigned in July to head the ABC Unified School District in the Cerritos-Lakewood area.
Under a leadership transition plan adopted by the Lennox trustees, Shields will serve as superintendent until he retires, giving the district about a year to search for a long-term replacement for Moffett.
Moffett was an assistant superintendent of Inglewood schools before he took over the Lennox district in 1976. He is widely credited with transforming a troubled ghetto school system in Lennox into a model district often cited by state and county educators for innovative programs and high teacher and student morale.
