Orange County Roundup : Cubs, Metro All-Stars to Play Sunday After Angel-Mariner Game

The Outdoor Dimensions Cubs, winners of the Metropolitan League, will meet an all-star baseball team comprised of players from the other nine league teams Sunday in Anaheim Stadium after the Angel-Mariner game.

Admission for the all-star game is free.

The Cubs, coached by Cypress College Coach Scott Pickler, finished 13-5, 2 1/2 games ahead of the Senik Rustlers, the North Orange County Hornets and the Orange Astros, who were 10-7-1.

Cub first baseman David Brodt hit .342 and led the team with four home runs and 21 RBIs. Other top hitters Bob Long (.344), Mike Connally (.372) and Mike Faddoul (.400).

Third baseman Tony Mendonza and shortstop Trevor Hoffman, who each hit .310, played strong defense.

Right-hander Eric Silva was the Cubs’ top pitcher with a 6-1 record and a 2.50 earned-run average. Reliever Kevin Bumgardner was 2-0 with one save.

The all-stars will feature the top two hitters in the league. Brent Reese (.488) and Bob Brucato (.484) played for the Santa Ana Cardinals.

Right-hander Gary Stotereau (6-0) was tied for the league lead in wins and had a 3.45 ERA for the Long Beach 49ers. The Hornets’ Brian Coriell (4-1, 2.89 ERA) also will pitch for the all-stars.

The all-stars lead the series, 11-9-1.

Kent Wiese, the Professional Golfers Assn. Southern California Section boys champion, will compete in the 11th annual PGA Junior Championships Aug. 21-24 at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Boys and girls champions from 41 regions will compete on the course that was the site of the 1983 Ryder Cup matches. Past winners of the event include current PGA star Willie Wood and LPGA star Kathy Baker.

Woodbridge High School has openings for two walk-on coaches.

The Warriors are seeking a water polo coach to start a program at the school. Woodbridge plans on having a freshman-sophomore water polo team this fall and a varsity team by 1987.

The school also needs a girls’ junior varsity tennis coach.

Laura McRae, former El Modena High School volleyball and softball standout, will attend St. Mary’s College and play both sports for the Gaels. McRae is coming off a senior year in which she batted .371 and was named the Century League’s Most Valuable Player. She also was named to the All-Century League team in volleyball. St Mary’s is the defending NAIA national volley champion.

The Pomona Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications for its Labor Day basketball tournament for adult teams Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The two men’s divisions are open pro-am and 6-foot 2-inches-and-under. Individual players may sign and will be placed on a team. The last day for registration will be Aug. 17. The eighth Cal State Long Beach women’s basketball camp will be August 17-22. The camp, which is run by 49er women’s Coach Joan Bonvicini, is for girls 9-17 and will stress fundamental.

Long Beach assistants Michael Abraham and LaTaunya Pollard also will provide instruction. Registration fee is $175 for day campers and $275 for campers who wish to stay overnight on the Long Beach campus. For more information, call (213) 498-4983.

A football coaching class designed for Pop Warner-level and high school coaches will be offered during the fall semester at Cypress College.

The class, which will meet every Thursday starting Aug. 21 from 6-8 p.m., will be taught by Don Lent, who formerly coached at Cypress. For more information, call 826-2220.

The Hoopbusters basketball camp will be Aug. 11-15 at Fullerton High School. The camp is for boys and girls in grades 4-9 and will stress offense in one hour sessions. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon and will be run by Ed Graham, Troy High School coach, and Randy Forgette, coach at Fullerton High. The cost is $30 per camper.
