San Diego Roundup : Horse Seminar Saturday at Del Mar

The California Thoroughbred Breeders Assn. and the Horseman’s Benevolent and Protective Assn. will conduct a seminar for prospective racehorse owners at Del Mar Saturday.

The free seminar, which begins at 11 a.m., coincides with the sale of 200 select yearlings by California Thoroughbred Sales Inc. The auction will be tonight, Sunday night and Monday night at 7. Both the seminar and the auction will be in the Del Mar Administration Conference Room. Scheduled speakers include Robert A. Sweeney, general manager of the breeders organization; Jay Hovdey, Breeders’ Cup Representative; and Mel Stute, trainer of Snow Chief.

The national champion Mission Valley YMCA gymnastics team will perform three floor and beam exercises Saturday as part of the San Diego Hall of Champions “Sports Demonstration Series.” The team won its third consecutive national title in Beaumont, Tex., in June.

The first exercise will begin at noon, the second at 1:30 p.m. and the third at 3:30. The demonstrations, in the Casa de Balboa building in Balboa Park, will cost $2 for adults, $1 for seniors and juniors (6-17). Children under 6 are free.

Cajon Speedway’s 19th racing weekend of the year will feature bomber, street and stock cars Saturday.

Gates open at 3 p.m., qualifying starts at 6 and racing begins at 7:30. Tickets are $6 for East Side, $5 for West Side, $2 for children 6-12. Children under 6 are admitted free.

The 1986 Miller High Life Thundertub Regatta will be Saturday at Enchanted Cove by Fiesta Island on Mission Beach. The tubs will be equipped with floating devices and powered by 5-, 7 1/2- and 8-horsepower engines.

Other competition will include Fancy Tubs, specially designed and decorated to the owner’s tastes; media personalities; and model hydroplane racing.

Events will begin at 10 a.m., and the first heat of the thundertubs will start at noon.

The San Diego Zoo Golf Classic will be Aug. 25 at the Bernardo Heights Country Club. San Diego Charger placekicker Rolf Benirschke is the honorary chairman of the event, which features 18 holes of golf, a putting contest, lunch and refreshments, a cocktail and awards reception and door prizes.

The ninth America’s Finest City Half Marathon will be run Aug. 24 at 7 a.m. The race will be limited to 6,000 entrants. Neil Finn, a director of the event, said Thursday that 4,800 people have entered. Mail entries will be accepted until Aug. 15. Those wishing to enter after that date can sign up at the Sheraton Harbor Island East from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m on Aug. 23.

The entry fee is $20. Entry forms are available at the American Lung Assn. office at 3861 Front St., or at any Square Pan Pizza location.
