Sandona Wins Scratch Main Cycle Event

John Sandona of Riche Canyon won the four-lap scratch main event of the weekly speedway motorcycle racing program Friday night in front of 4,687 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Sandona took the lead in the first turn and pulled away for an easy wire-to-wire victory. It was his first win of the season after missing the most of the first half because of injuries.

Defending national champion Alan Christian of Huntington Beach was second, holding off Mike Faria of Colton in each of the last four turns. Steve Lucero of Riverside was fourth.

In the five-lap handicap main, Jim Sisemore overcame a 30-yard handicap to win. Bobby Ott was second, Sandona third, Christian fourth, Bart Bast fifth and Rocky Robinson sixth.

Tom Burge of New York was the second division winner and Danny Fallan of New York won the third division.
