Pomp and Circumstance

For some Americans, including your Tia Gindick, the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson would seem to be a commercial venture put on for the benefit of tourism and in competition with the London July sales (“Having a Merrie Time in England,” July 23). In case you may not have noticed, the wedding was a religious ceremony, the bonus being an opportunity to see the Royal Family out in force in a setting of pageantry seen nowhere else in the world. The British are not excessive in their superlatives, and would no doubt call this wedding a very nice occasion.

Television coverage here left a lot to be desired, specifically when the commentators decided to discuss at length the possibility of Miss Ferguson’s diet before the wedding, which, pardon the pun, I thought was in the worst possible taste. This kind of non-stop gossip ruined it for me.
