A mature male Oriental fruit fly was found during a routine check of insect traps in San Diego County last week, the county’s agriculture commissioner said Tuesday.
The sexually mature fly was the first fruit fly found this summer and was discovered Thursday in an orange tree in La Mesa, Commissioner Kathleen Thuner said. Additional traps were placed within a one-square-mile area around the original trap, but no other fruit flies have been caught, she said.
The Oriental fruit fly is a pest to tomatoes, avocados and citrus crops, Thuner said.
