Officer Ousted in Gurkhas Case

LONDON — A British army officer who was beaten up by his own soldiers for allegedly insulting them has been relieved of his command of the Hong Kong-based Gurkhas, the Defense Ministry said Monday.
The officer, Maj. Corin Pearce, 31, suffered two broken ribs and severe head injuries in a brawl after British-American military exercises in Hawaii last May, a defense spokesman said.
The assault led to the dismissal last week of 111 members of the 1st Battalion of the 7th Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Gurkha Rifles for refusing to cooperate in the investigation into the incident.
The spokesman said some of the Gurkhas have been reinstated, and several are considering appeals against their dismissals.
