Lights Go On in Gesture Against Crime

Joining a nationwide observance, residents across the San Fernando Valley turned their “Lights On Against Crime” Tuesday.

Los Angeles City Councilman Hal Bernson said many residents in his West Valley district turned their porch lights on for an hour Tuesday night and drove with their car lights on during the day in support of crime prevention.

Bernson and state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia) had asked for the porch illumination and the state Legislature had called last week for motorists’ participation as part of the national “Night Out Against Crime” rally. The California part of the event was called “Lights On Against Crime.”

About 200 people, most of them members of Neighborhood Watch groups, attended a ceremony Tuesday at Northridge Park, where Bernson thanked them for their efforts and turned on a searchlight to mark the start of the porch lighting.

Bernson said the group was making a statement that “we’re not going to stand for any more crime, and we will do our best to make it tough on criminals.”

About 15 million Americans participated in similar rallies across the country, said a spokesman for the National Assn. of Town Watch, which organized the event.
