Firm Cleared in Bridge Collapse
A jury today found the state of Connecticut at fault in the June 28, 1983, collapse of a 100-foot section of the Mianus River bridge in which three people died.
The state had filed suit against Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton, the designer of the bridge, contending that the angle at which the span was constructed caused its failure. The state sought damages estimated at $25 million. But the Superior Court jury, after deliberating three hours over which party was liable, cleared the New York City engineering firm of negligence.
