A prominent booster who has been asked to disassociate himself from University of Florida athletics apparently helped institute a private investigation of arch-rival Florida State, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

The paper said that Fred E. Sutton, a developer-businessman from Palm Bay, Fla., refused to discuss what role he played in the probe or what the investigation revealed. He did say, however, that Florida, which is already on NCAA probation for recruiting violations, had nothing to do with it.

Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden told the newspaper that some Seminole players and potential recruits were visited at home by people who said they were investigating FSU.
