A state Democratic Party subcommittee today stripped Atty. Gen. Charles Graddick, a former Republican, of its primary nomination for governor, ruling that illegal GOP crossover votes robbed Lt. Gov. Bill Baxley of a runoff victory.

The five-man panel deliberated more than 18 hours before finding unanimously in favor of Baxley, who claimed that Graddick’s 8,756-vote victory was accomplished by a massive effort by Republicans to cross over and vote in the Democratic Party’s June 24 runoff election. Graddick vowed to appeal.
