Vietnam permitted U.S. military officials to inspect the wreckage of American bombers shot down during the Vietnam War and released new information on missing U.S. soldiers, Lt. Col. Joe Harvey, head of the Hawaii-based Joint Casualty Resolution Center, said in Bangkok, Thailand. He declined to elaborate but said the U.S. delegation gave the Vietnamese reports of sightings of U.S. servicemen still alive in Vietnam. U.S. officials have said there are about 100 unsubstantiated reports of American soldiers alive in Vietnam. Hanoi has denied it is holding any Americans but has agreed to investigate the reports. Harvey, who led the U.S. delegation that visited Hanoi last week, said he expects to receive further information on the sightings in future talks with the Vietnamese.
