HONIARA, Solomon Islands — Prisoners lured a guard into a cell by faking illness Saturday, stole the officer’s keys and led all but one of the 141 inmates in a mass escape from jail in the capital of the Solomon Islands, authorities said.
One prisoner stayed behind, a police official said, “because he was an honest man.”
Nearly 18 hours after the jailbreak on the island, about 1,500 miles northeast of Sydney, Australia, police said they recaptured 83 escapees.
