Vandals poured paint on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana’s $60,000 Mercedes-Benz at the team’s training camp at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif.

The San Francisco Chronicle quoted unidentified sources as saying Montana and receiver Dwight Clark were accosted in the car about 11 p.m. Thursday by four young men in an automobile. The damage was reported a few hours later by campus police, Clark said.

Montana said: “I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t even want to think about it.”

The newspaper said gray paint was poured on the hood of the white 500 SEC and at least one window was broken.

Meanwhile, 49er Coach Bill Walsh refused to comment on complaints by Montana in a soon-to-be-released book. The book, called “Audibles--My Life in Football,” was co-authored by Montana and New York writer Bob Raissman.

Montana says: “There are things I see happening on the field that I know we can do, but I’m reluctant to go to Bill because I know that nine times out of 10, he’s not going to take my suggestions.

“Let’s face it, the underlying basis of any friction between Bill and me is his desire for people to believe I am one of the better quarterbacks in the game because of his offensive system. . . . Not (just) any quarterback could achieve what I have simply because of a coach’s system.

“I don’t care what Bill or anyone else says, there are things I know I can do on a football field that no one else is capable of doing.”

Asked about the statements, Walsh said: “All we’re doing in this conversation is trying to provoke me or Joe, and I don’t want to have any part of it.”
