The Israeli government approved construction of a controversial Mormon education center in Jerusalem on condition that the Mormons provide a written promise to refrain from missionary activity, a Cabinet statement said. Ultra-Orthodox Jews had protested against construction of the $15-million annex of Utah’s Brigham Young University, charging it would be used to convert Jews to the Church of Latter-day Saints. A ministerial committee set up to investigate the allegations--denied by Mormon leaders--said last week there were no legal means to stop the building. Mormon leaders have pledged to send home any student found to be seeking converts.
