8 Killed in Riots in Pakistan
Anti-government riots swept the home province of jailed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto today, leaving at least eight dead, including four policemen, authorities said. Opposition sources put the toll at 11.
The deaths in the southern province of Sind came on the first day of an opposition-led nationwide campaign to overthrow President Zia ul-Haq and to free jailed dissident leaders. Police Sunday shot dead two rioters in the Sind provincial capital of Karachi and police had said they feared violence would erupt after opposition rallies today in about 30 Sind province towns.
