Former astronaut Charles (Pete) Conrad Jr. has been named vice president-space program development at McDonnell Douglas Corp.’s Astronautics division in Huntington Beach, a new position.
Conrad will work on a number of programs, including the company’s space station effort. Next year, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is expected to award contracts for construction of a space station.
McDonnell Douglas is competing with Rockwell International for a contract to build the station’s overall framework and a work and living quarters module.
In addition to walking on the moon as an Apollo 12 astronaut, Conrad also flew in the Gemini program and was commander of one of the three Skylab missions in 1973.
He joined McDonnell Douglas in 1976 and most recently was corporate vice president.
