Chile’s President Augusto Pinochet has rejected U.S. calls for increased democracy, and Washington is now considering economic pressure, the New York Times reported. It quoted Administration officials as saying that Gen. John R. Galvin, head of the U.S. Southern Command, met with Pinochet 10 days ago to tell him that Washington wants a transition to democracy by the end of the decade. “The response was that he, Pinochet, will set Chile’s course without advice from anyone else,” one official said. The State Department confirmed the meeting but declined to provide details.
