The Nation : Fire Crews Gain in West

Share

About 18,000 firefighters gained ground against lightning-sparked blazes that have burned nearly 400,000 acres of forest and grazing land in the West. A prison inmate on a fire crew in Washington was reported killed, and a pilot surveying blazes in Nevada escaped injury after crash-landing on a steep mountainside. “If the wind dies down, by golly, we’re going to put a hammerlock on this thing in a few days,” said Ron DeHart of the U.S. Forest Service in Enterprise, Ore. Fires on 92,150 acres in Idaho, Montana, Utah, Oregon and Washington were reported still raging.
