Prime Minister Shimon Peres plans to travel to the West African nation of Cameroon next week in another step to restore Israel’s once-warm ties with black Africa.

Israel radio said Monday that Peres was invited by President Paul Biya to sign an agreement to renew diplomatic relations, which Cameroon broke off after the 1973 Middle East War.

Peres’ spokesman Uri Savir declined to confirm the report. But other officials in the prime minister’s office were registering journalists wishing to accompany Peres on the three-day trip.

Another senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that contacts are continuing, although an agreement to resume ties has not been completed.
