U.S. Engineers Aid Monument to Goethe

FRANKFURT, West Germany — U.S. Air Force engineers built a temporary road in a Frankfurt park Monday so that a 40-ton steel monument called “A House for Goethe” can be set up.
The monument, donated to the city by a group called “the Assn. for Beautifying Frankfurt,” was created by Spanish sculptor Eudardo Chillido, organizers of the project said.
Frankfurt already has several monuments dedicated to its favorite native son, the legendary poet, dramatist, novelist and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born here on Aug. 28, 1749. He died in 1832.
According to the organizers, who asked the Air Force for help, the monument is to arrive in Frankfurt on Sept. 10.
Air Force spokesman Hans Ostertag said members of the 435th Civil Engineering Squadron at Rhine-Main Air Base near Frankfurt took on the project because they are well-versed in construction of temporary airport runways with steel sheeting.
