A stolen Picasso oil painting that self-proclaimed “cultural terrorists” had threatened to destroy was recovered undamaged today, police said.

Police found the painting, “Weeping Woman,” in a railway station locker following an anonymous telephone tip to a newspaper.

The painting, worth an estimated $1.2 million, was stolen Aug. 3 from the National Gallery in Victoria state by a group that in subsequent messages called itself ACT--”Australian Cultural Terrorists.”

The group had threatened to destroy the painting unless the state government increased subsidies for local artists. The demand was not met.

National Gallery Director Patrick McCaughey said there was a note in the locker with the painting but declined to comment on its content.
