Orange Mayor James H. Beam, who is running against Anaheim Mayor Donald R. Roth for the 4th District seat on the Board of Supervisors, released his tax returns--as Roth did last week--at a press conference Tuesday in Santa Ana.

Beam’s federal return for 1985 showed wages of more than $120,000, interest income of $3,314, capital gains of $3,974 and business losses of $27,608. Beam and his wife, filing jointly, paid $16,160 in federal taxes.

Roth reported far less income on the 1985 federal tax return he released last week. Roth’s return, filed jointly with his wife, showed total income of $36,549 and a federal tax payment of $2,736.

Beam also said he would release all of his and his wife’s business and personal records, including balance sheets, checkbooks and profit and loss statements if Roth and his wife would do the same.

“Then we can direct our attention to the real issues of this campaign . . . the views, performance and integrity of Don Roth and myself,” Beam said.

Beam and Roth, who finished first and second respectively in the June primary, are battling to succeed Ralph B. Clark, who is retiring after 16 years representing the district that includes Anaheim, Buena Park, Orange and La Palma.
