Britain and Guatemala renewed diplomatic ties after a five-year break arising from Guatemala’s longstanding claim to territory in Belize, a neighboring ex-British colony. The British Foreign Office said both countries agreed to restore relations to the consular level and hope to re-establish full diplomatic links by the end of the year. British officials stressed that the agreement does not alter Britain’s commitment to the defense of Belize, a tiny Caribbean state between Mexico and Honduras that became independent in September, 1981.
