Duncan Out--Broken Foot

Mariano Duncan doesn’t have a leg left to stand on.

The Dodger shortstop, who already had suffered ankle, calf and hamstring injuries to his right leg, fractured his left foot in Monday night’s game against the Mets and is expected to be out a month.

Duncan’s latest injury was almost as strange as his first, in which he was struck in the calf by a line drive during batting practice last Wednesday in Houston.

This time, Duncan was struck in the foot by a throw by Mets center fielder Len Dykstra while scoring the Dodgers’ fourth run in the fifth inning Monday.

Duncan remained in the game and singled in the ninth. He went into the trainers’ room after the game to place his foot in ice, and also took a bag of ice home with him.

But when pain persisted in the the morning, he called teammates and friend Pedro Guerrero, who recommended that Duncan go to the hospital. Another friend took Duncan to the Centinela Hospital Medical Center, where X-rays showed the fifth metatarsal in his foot was fractured.

Duncan, who had played in just 98 of the Dodgers’ 119 games, becomes the 13th Dodger to go on the disabled list this season. Pedro Guerrero and Bill Madlock have been on the DL twice.

Shortstop Dave Anderson, who fractured the little finger on his right hand and didn’t expect to be activated until Monday at the earliest, took Duncan’s place on the roster.
